Player Staff: Scott Howarth

Here is one of our new Player Staffers on the new playerstaff.com concept site. Scott plays on the Europro Tour and with a swing like this...why wouldn't he!

In this analysis, we ask Scott to perform a few Titleist Performance Institute screens on video to give us more data before we start talking about ways to fix his ball flight issues.

The videos, followup, and communication via email, skype, and other ways like instant video from the iPhone will only enhance our new relationship. And remember, Scott is in the UK and we are in Texas!

RC-

Love your work. This vid hit home for me. I'm 6' 5" and struggle with a flat swing plane. What feels Couples-like at the top is barely level with my shoulders. With a year of work, I'm about to where Scott is above.

Anyway, about 9 months ago I came across this shoulder test and sure enough, I can't get my forearm even to vertical while standing upright. I've done many TPI drills to help with flexibility, and have seen some improvement.

So...in my case...it is what it is. Left arm almost level with shoulder, and I fight being laid off and coming in below swing plan on my way down.

Any thoughts on how to deal with this?

Thanks, RC!

Hi Tim,

I'm glad you found this video and the TPI exercises! Of course without seeing you perform the test, I can only speculate, but in some cases this is a shoulder blade and rhomboid problem. When you take your posture, your shoulder blade loses stability and wanders over the shoulder joint and that creates the limitation. You need to find your rhomboid (again!) and focus on good posture while pinching your shoulder blades back.

The best investment is to probably find a TPI Certified Physio guy in your area to get some analysis. But another very good alternative is the shoulder matrix exercises and any exercise by Tom House. In Fact, I think the Tom House DVDs are still for sale at the MyTPI store.

However it's always wise to see the doctor first...you never know if there's a slight tear or a bone spur or a tendon issue.

If you have a camera/iPhone, I'd love to see the screens and the swings.

Thanks so much for the response, RC. I happen to have a couple swings from August on my iPhone...so I just posted them to YouTube (which you can check out below). Please don't feel obliged to review, though. I wasn't intending to hit you up for a free lesson. Not that I'm complaining ;-)

I'm 39 so less flexible than I used to be. I did talk to a golf trainer, and he said too much bench pressing and too little work on my rear delts hasn't helped my shoulders!

I've read the L.A.W.s book, which suggests you're born with a swing that fits your body. So I'm wondering what I should focus on to get this swing on plane!

I'm in Boston, so won't be able to come to you for a lesson. But if you have an opinion I'm all ears.

Feel free to email me directly, unless you think your response will help other readers.
Thanks again!

Tim, if you could, email these swings right from your phone to playerstaff@mygolfperformance.com. I'd be happy to take look at them on my swing analysis software.
