Hi
Love your site, great job. My question is: Are there different shafts for putters. I always hear about new shafts for irons and drivers, but what about putters?
Thanks guys

Jay-

I agree with you that more attention is given to irons and drivers in regard to shafts more than putters. The majority of putter shafts that are in a generic off the rack putter will be similar in weight and flex. Some Tour pros like to experiment and tweak with different shaft flexes, but more often than not most will be similar.

Cameron has done some really cool work with graphite shafts made by Fujikura and some other companies like YST offer graphite putter shafts as well. The flex on these shafts may in fact be a little weaker than their steel counterparts in an effort to promote a little more "feel" in the weight of the putter head, but the weight should be very similar to a steel shaft. Aesthetic changes are often made to shafts with black coating or making the shaft "stepless" like a Rifle shaft as opposed to a traditional stepped steel shaft, but they should perform the same.

Thanks for your question,
SR

Jay, from the old school, Spencer and I get to see Ben Crenshaw regularly. He's been on a putter shaft quest for years since his original was broken in a tragic three putt accident on tour. (: His gamer Wilson 8802 chrome has been literally burned off. He believes the shafts made in the 1960s were softer than today's shafts. So...maybe experimenting with a really old putter could be fun and if the shaft fits your current putter...might as well try it!

Putter shafts behave just like other shafts in that they stiffen or soften based on length, tipping, and head weight. It plays a small role in terms of feel though because acoustics are the overwhelming factor. There is some tech out there with frequency shafts, and shaft inserts but the speed of sound from impact to your ears is faster than the vibrations caused by the impact.

Thanks for the question! Let us know if you have more.
